Russian Dashcams Capture Shocking Meteorite Strike

One of the big advantages of living in a country where everyone seems to have a camera pointing out the window of their car is that when something truly bonkers happens, you have lots of footage for the world to watch and say "holy shit" at.

And that's what just happened in the Urals area of Russia today, when a pretty damn big asteroid turned into a meteor and then a meteorite as it slammed, bright and noisy, into the ground.

In that video above, listen to the sound of the impact; there's car horns and breaking glass and it's so much like how you'd imagine it, it almost seems fake. But it certainly doesn't seem fake to the people near Chelyabinsk, where over 100 people are reported to have been injured.

What's also amazing is just how calm these drivers seem to be upon seeing a burning object screaming across the sky and then slamming into the ground with a boom.

More on this over at Gizmodo .
