Okay, show of hands: Who wants a decently-powerful diesel rear-wheel-drive car with a BMW badge on it? If you raised your hand, BMW has good news for you: the 328d is set to debut in a few weeks at the New York Auto Show.
The last time we Americans got a diesel 3-Series, it was the obscenely powerful twin-turbo 335d, which had nearly as much torque as BMW's own V12 while returning 36 mpg on the highway. That car was insanely awesome, even though it only came with an autobox.
This new diesel is a bit different, but it sounds potent in its own way. The upcoming 328d will have a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine good for 180 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. That should do zero to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds while exceeding 40 mpg on the highway. Not bad at all.
Oh, and Automobile says it will come in wagon form, too. Let's hope that engine will have an available manual transmission too so we can all have that dream car we claim to covet but probably wouldn't buy in real life.
And while you're at it, BMW, howzabout bringing over that glorious six-cylinder 330d you sell in Europe, the one with 413 lb-ft of torque? Come on. We'll take good care of it. We promise.
In other Bimmer news, expect to see the North American debuts of the 3-Series GT and the front-wheel-drive hybrid Concept Active Tourer in New York. I am slightly less excited about those.
